 Assalamualaikum WR. WB

A. Definition of Conditional Sentence Type 3

A conditional sentence type 3 or conditional third is a conditional sentence that is used when the result of that condition cannot possibly be realized because the condition has to be fulfilled in the past.

Conditions are in the subordinate clause with the "if" conjunction subordinates, while the result / effect is in the main clause.

The third conditional sentence is a conditional sentence when a condition cannot be realized at all. It can be described as a completely impossible state or just a dream or imagination. In this third type of conditional sentence, the sentence form uses the past perfect equipped with auxiliary modalities such as would, could, and should. The formula used is if + past perfect, would / should / could / might + have + past participle. Example of sentences:

- If you remember to invite me, I will attend your party.
- We might have gone to South America if she wasn't pregnant.
- If you tell me you need a ride I'll be leaving early.
- If I have cleaned the house, I can go to the movies.
- If he doesn't take the course, he won't get a scholarship.

- If I lock my car, the thief will not steal my car.

As in all conditional sentences, the order of the clauses is not fixed. You may have to adjust pronouns and punctuation marks when changing clause order, but the meaning is the same.

  • You would have gotten wet if it had rained.
  • You would have passed your exam if you had worked harder.
  • If you had worked harder, you would have passed your exam.

  • If you hadn't lied to me before, I would have believed you.

F. Function

Conditional type 3 refers to the possible past conditions and possible past outcomes. These sentences are completely assumptive and unreal because it is too late to do so now and the results are unlikely. The implication of regret is always there in type 3 conditional sentences. The reality is the opposite of that sentence statement. In type 3 conditional sentences, the time has passed and the situation is presumed or not
Example :
  • If I had worked harder I would have passed the exam. (Tetapi, saya tidak bekerja keras dan saya tidak lulus ujian.)
  • If I had known you were coming I would have baked a cake. (Tetapi, saya tidak tahu dan saya tidak memanggang kue.)
  • I would have been happy if you had called me on my birthday. (Tetapi, Anda tidak menelepon saya dan saya tidak senang.)
In conditional type 3 sentences, you can also use modal in the main clause instead of stating the degree of certainty, permission, or recommendation regarding the outcome or outcome.
